Discover the offer of Venezia Santa Lucia
Thanks to its unique position at the west end of Canal Grande, Venezia Santa Lucia is the only access point to the lagoon city and the gate that connects it to the mainland and the rest of the world. The station is a short walk from Piazzale Roma – the last access point for cars and most public transports, transited by 80 mln people per year – via the Constitution Bridge. The presence of world-famous events such as the Biennale and the Venice Film Festival, along with that of some of the most renowned art and architecture of the planet, make the lagoon city an unparalleled tourist destination, that stands out for the large presence of international visitors. Inside the station, passengers (29 mln per year) can count on a full shopping experience with shops, restaurants and services all located on one level.
It was architect Angiolo Mazzoni who created the first design proposals for Venezia Santa Lucia, since 1924.
In 1934 a tender for the construction of the railway station was launched and won by Virgilio Vallot, whose project, however, was left on stand-by until 1936, when the realization of the front body of the passenger building was finally assigned to architects Mazzoni and Vallot, who collaborated at it until 1943, and the reconstruction of the railway building to Mazzoni alone.
The station’s final design was completed after WW2, based on a project by Paolo Perilli.
