History

Naples’ first railway station was built in 1866 based on a project by architect and urban planner Enrico Alvino. In the early ‘70s, the station was demolished in order to build a more comfortable and functional structure. The new building, opened in 1966, featured an ultra-modern, almost futuristic aesthetics with clean, rational geometric lines and immediately became a symbol of the renovation and upgrading of the whole area. Among the distinctive architectural elements that identify the station in the collective imagery are the ‘pyramids’, i.e. the triangular modules that form the building’s roof structure, an iconic sight often seen in movies, advertising spots and videoclips. Such architecture, in fact, became famous after its appearance in a Carosello (evening tv show) as the iconic set of a music video by legendary singer Mina performing “Se telefonando”. Over the last year, the station has undergone a restoration intervention aimed at improving the areas’ functionality, which allowed the introduction and development of a new retail and service offer, finally suitable to fulfill the needs of passengers and locals.
